     FOURTH QUARTER PERFECT ATTENDANCE

    Students who had perfect attendance during the fourth quarter were recognized on Thursday, May 29th.  Two of the students were the lucky winners of an iPad mini; the others received gift certificates.  Winners of the iPad minis were Marcos Barrera and Ruben Turrubiartes.  Rigoberto Villegas, Alexis Mendez, and Reynaldo Torres received the gift certificates.  Congratulations to these students for their Perfect Attendance achievement!

    3rd ANNUAL PTSA FASHION SHOW
    KEYS Academy 3rd Annual PTSA Fashion Show was held at the HCISD Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 23rd.  Students and teachers spent several weeks designing and creating the fashion show pieces for the runway.  Special thanks to our teacher coordinators Mr. Albert Gonzalez, Mrs. Karina Lopez, and Mrs. Oneida Trevino who went the extra mile to make this event EXTRAORDINARY!  Congratulations to all of the students and staff members who participated in this magical extravaganza!  Click here to view a slideshow of the event.

     TEACHER OF THE YEAR

    Mr. Albert Gonzalez has been selected as KEYS Academy's Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Gonzalez is our Reading teacher and has worked at KEYS for four years.  He is active in campus activities such as PTSA, the Yearbook Committee, the Annual Fashion Show - just to name a few!  We appreciate his hard work and dedication to KEYS Academy and its students!  CONGRATULATIONS, MR. GONZALEZ!!!

    RISING LEADERS GRADUATION
    The Rising Leaders Class XXI was honored at a graduation reception on Tuesday, April 22 at the HCISD Administration Boardroom.  The Rising Leaders program identifies students who have displayed great potential for leadership and allows them to participate in a series of workshops aimed at further developing those leadership skills.  Graduating students pictured above are Isaiah Delgado, Jasmyn Chavez, and Jennifer Torres.  Congratulations, students!  Click here to see more pictures of the event.

    EARTH DAY
    Earth Day at KEYS Academy was celebrated on Thursday, April 17th.  Activities to commemorate the special day included newspaper print fashions, revamping glass jars, trash sculptures, birdbath and butterfly garden cleanup, sunshine s'mores, seashell mobiles, and a wildscape art project.  Many thanks to Ms. Patterson for organizing the event and to other staff members for making it all possible.  Click here or on the image above to see a slideshow of the day's activities.

    KEYS ACADEMY TEACHER IS HCISD TEACHER OF THE WEEK
    Mrs. Oneida Trevino, art teacher, was recently selected as HCISD's Teacher of the Week.  Mrs. Trevino motivates and encourages her students to participate in events such as the RGV Birding Festival, PTA Reflections Contest, and RGV Livestock Show.  Many of the students who have competed in these events throughout the years have been recognized for their artwork in city, regional, and even state levels.  Congratulations, Mrs. Trevino - we are proud to have you as part of our team!  Click here to read the HCISD article about Mrs. Trevino.

    5K WALK/RUN FOR CHILDREN
    On Saturday, April 5th, community members of all ages participated in the Harlingen 5K Walk/Run for Children event to help give children a voice on the matter of child abuse.  Our very own Brenda Saenz-Garcia, HCISD Teen Parenting Coordinator, partnered with Prevent Child Abuse Texas to organize the event.  Mrs. Saenz-Garcia has also planned other activities at KEYS Academy throughout the month of April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.  Click here to read about the 5K in the Valley Morning Star and here to see photos of the event.

    ISAIAH DELGADO RECOGNIZED FOR HIS WORK WITH KHGN

    PTA REFLECTIONS STATE FINALIST - JUAN ROJAS 
    Juan Rojas was selected as a PTA Reflections Contest State Finalist by the Harlingen City Council PTA.  He was recognized Tuesday night at the School Board meeting along with other District students who advanced in the competition.  Congratulations, Juan!  We are proud that you are representing KEYS Academy and  Harlingen CISD!  Click here for more pictures of the event.

    Congratulations to the following students for their accomplishments at the 75th Annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Art Contest:  Juan Rojas, 8th Grade, Prismacolor - 3rd place; Catherine Saldana, 8th Grade, Pen & Ink - 3rd Place; Ruben Turrubiartes, 10th Grade, Pastels - 3rd Place; Giovanna Cantu, 10th Grade, Prismacolor - 3rd Place; and  Hector Chavez, 11th Grade, Prismacolor - 1st Place.  Congratulations, students!

    PTA REFLECTIONS AWARDS CEREMONY 
    Students who placed in the PTA Reflections Arts Recognition Program were recognized on Monday, February 10th at the District's Performing Arts Center.  KEYS Academy students Catherine Saldana, Raegan Reyes, Juan Rojas, Kent Largo, Aaron Saldana, and Clarissa Martinez were presented awards for their entries in categories such as Visual Arts, Literature, and Photography.  Juan Rojas' art-piece, "Altamira Oriole" is advancing to the State competition.  Special thanks to Art teacher, Mrs. Oneida Trevino, for encouraging students to participate in the contest.  Congratulations to all of the students who were recognized.  Click on the image below to view photos of the awards ceremony.

    FEAST OF SHARING
    KEYS Academy students put on aprons, hairnets and gloves to volunteer at the annual HEB Feast of Sharing on Friday, November 22nd.  The volunteers helped set tables, served food and drinks, and even assisted with the clean-up!  Thousands attended the event filled with music, entertainments, hot meals, and fellowship.   Many thanks to our student volunteers who helped spread the spirit of the holidays by providing a service to their community.  Click on the pic below to view a slideshow of the event.

     "HALL"-O-WEEN STROLL
    Children from the Garden Daycare at KEYS Academy took their annual "HALL"-O-WEEN stroll on October 31st.  Students lined the hallways and greeted the little ones with smiles and treats.  Everyone had a "SPOOK"-TACULAR time!!!

    Zumbathon

     
    ZUMBATHON 
    On Saturday, October 5th, KEYS Academy held its very first Zumbathon.  Ms. Vanessa de la Cruz, certified Zumba instructor and KEYS Academy history teacher, gave participants a workout to remember!  The Zumbathon is part of the District's initiative to get "FIT 4 LIFE!" which encourages physical activity and healthy eating habits to improve overall wellness of both students and staff.  Many thanks to everyone who helped make the Zumbathon a success!  Click here to view a slideshow of the event. 

     
    STUDENTS VISIT MUSEUM OF SOUTH TEXAS HISTORY On Thursday, September 26th ACP students enjoyed a tour of the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory) in Edinburg.  The museum has fascinating exhibits where one can discover the rich heritage and blended culture found in the Rio Grande Valley between South Texas and Northeastern Mexico.  To visit the museum's website click here. 
    HISPANIC HERITAGE RECOGNITION 
    UCP Students recognized Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, September 27thFestivities included a Hispanic Heritage PowerPoint Presentation, Pin the Tail on the Burro, music, and a lot of delicious food. 

    HCISD WELLNESS KICKOFF AND FUN RUN CHALLENGE
    Students and staff cheered their hearts out at the Harlingen CISD Wellness Kickoff and Fun Run Challenge on September 23rd at Boggus Stadium.  The yearly kickoff encourages a healthy lifestyle by promoting good nutrition and exercise.  Many thanks to everyone who participated!!!  To view District photos of the event, click here
