    HCISD and the Harlingen community celebrate Texas Parents Day

    Members of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District community gathered at Pendelton Park to celebrate Texas Parents Day 2012 on Aug. 24.The event provided games and refreshments to welcome parents and students to the new school year, and gave parents the unique opportunity to get to know HCISD administration and staff in a family-friendly environment.

    HCISD begins a new school year

    The classrooms were filled with excited students as the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District opened its doors for the 2012- 2013 school year on Monday. “Our administrators, faculty and staff came ready today,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores. “ We came ready to welcome back our over 18,000 students into our district, and prepared to help continue them towards a prosperous future and to start our best school year ever at HCISD.”

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District celebrated the start of a new year with the help of 21st century technology. HCISD hosted its first digitally distributed kick-off celebration on Thursday for half of its 28 campuses, the kick-off will continue throughout Friday for the remaining schools.

    All Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District teachers and staff will receive a pay increase after the Board of Trustees approved the item for the 2012-2013 school year budget during a special meeting Tuesday night.

  • Board approves Romero as new executive director for school leadership

    Board approves Romero as new executive director for school leadership

    After 23 years working at J.W. Long Elementary, Lori Romero was named as the executive director for school leadership for the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District during the July school board meeting Tuesday night. Romero, who has served as the Long Elementary principal since 2005, also served at the school as a teacher and an assistant principal. The executive director for school leadership will assist the Deputy Superintendent for Transformation and School Support Dr. Arturo Cavazos. In the new role, Romero will provide support for principals at the district’s 27 campuses.

    Board forms special committee for innovation and technology

    School board members and administrators met on Tuesday June 26 as part of a Special Committee for Innovation and Technology, a new venture that aims to strategically review the district’s current technology programs and to develop new initiatives. The committee, which includes board members Dr. Nolan Perez, George McShan and Javier DeLeon as well as Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores and Deputy Superintendent for Transformational Leadership Dr. Arturo Cavazos, will meet regularly to discuss the district’s technology plan, areas for expansion of technology utilization and advise the district on funding and implementation strategies.

    Board approves new HR director, assistant principal at HHS

    Tuesday night the Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Loretta Lynn Sanchez as a Director of Human Resources and Doyle Jackson Todd, Jr. as an Assistant Principal at Harlingen High School. Mrs. Sanchez received her Masters in Educational Leadership and Counseling and Guidance from the University of Texas-Pan America and is currently an Assistant Principal for Bowie Elementary. Mr. Todd has a Masters in Education from the University of Texas-Brownsville and comes to us from Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen ISD.

    Board restructures, appoints Dr. Maldonado as president

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees restructured its board during Monday night’s special meeting. The board appointed Dr. Cesar Maldonado to serve as board president for the 2012-2013 school year, replacing Gerry Fleuriet. The board also named George McShan as the new vice president and Javier De Leon as the new secretary.

    Architect releases new renderings of Ninth Grade Academy

    ERO Architects released more artist renderings for the Ninth Grade Academy. The new campus, which will service students who are currently in seventh grade, opening in August 2013. The 23.3 million project will hold between 1,200 and 1,300 students from Harlingen High School and Harlingen HIgh School South, and will have an emphasis on technology and project based learning.     From ground breaking to foundation setting

    Construction first began on May 25, 2011 for the new middle school campus and is progressing rather quickly. Workers are moving fast in completing classroom wings because it's a repetitive process that they've become familiar with.

  • Starting Fresh

    Starting Fresh

    Even though the school year has come to an end, many campuses are busy with summer school and, thanks to the recent bond, various renovations.A team of painters, along with summer help from the Transportation and Child Nutrition departments, are currently working at Harlingen High School South in refurbishing campus lockers and painting them Hawk green and orange. Ken Lee, director of maintenance for HCISD, said the project involves sanding and prepping lockers, along with taping off and protecting the floors.
