Significance of Campus Name
Lamar Elementary School is named after Mirabeau B. Lamar. In 1839 Congress followed a suggestion by Pres. Mirabeau B. Lamar to set aside land from the public domain for support of public schools. The Harlingen area was claimed by the Republic of Texas as unappropriated public domain. Survey No. 36 was called Cameron County School Lands. Pres. Lamar had the foresight to make sure there would be land for building public schools.
