
Standing in front of a crowd of teachers, parents and education professionals from across the Rio Grande Valley last spring, Lorezno Hernandez did his best to stay calm and represent his professional organization well. As a result of impending budget cuts to the public schools in Texas, Rio Grande Valley Superintendents, politicians and members of the Texas State Teachers Association came together at Donna Redskin Stadium to voice their concerns, Hernandez said.

HCISD Child Nutrition visited Dishman Elementary Tuesday afternoon to talk with students about the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program that provides healthy treats for three Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District elementary schools. The FFVP is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools during the school day. The goal of this program is to improve students’ overall diets and create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. Three HCISD schools were selected by the Texas Department of Agriculture to participate in the program this year. Bowie Elementary and Zavala Elementary are rounding off year three in the program while Dishman Elementary is new to the program this school year.
