    The Ben Milam Elementary Mustangs made a splash on a big stage, finishing no. 5 in the National Scholastic Chess Tournament this past weekend in Nashville, Tenn.

    Despite the crowd of hundreds of players, teachers, parents and coaches in the giant conference halls that host big chess tournaments, Savanna Mendoza has been able to keep her eyes and attention firmly on the board. On Tuesday, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the Ben Milam and Sam Houston elementary teams for the trip to the National Scholastic Chess Championship in Nashville, Tenn. next month. Savanna, a motivated student who likes her math and science classes, is thrilled for the opportunity to compete against students from across the country, she said.

    Former state chess champion aspires to be teacher

    When he grows up, Ben Milam Elementary fifth grade student Omar Arizpe wants to be like his chess team coach, Jesse Saldivar, he said. “When I grow up, I want to let other kids know what it’s like to be a leader,” Omar said. “He taught us that you need to believe, and if you always believe, then you’ll be able to reach your goal.”

    Student reflects on chess team experience, leadership lessons

    Two weeks after her chess team earned its fourth consecutive trip to the National Scholastic Chess Championship, Stephanie Torres, an insightful, smart fifth grade student from Ben Milam Elementary, reflected about how the ultimate strategy game has prepared her for life. “I don’t just play because I get to go places and because I get to win trophies,” Stephanie said. “I play because it helps me to become a leader.”

    Chess teams placed 2nd, 3rd at state tournament to advance to nationals

    The Ben Milam Elementary chess team will make its fourth consecutive appearance at the national chess tournament after placing 2nd in Elementary JV and 3rd in Primary JV divisions during last weekend’s state tournament in Dallas.

  • Ben Milam Students Compete in Chest Tournament

    Students at Ben Milam competed at the regional chess tournament in San Benito. Students placing individually were Rene Lerma, and Emily Capetillo with first place trophies. The teams will be advancing to the State Chess Championships in Dallas, February 18th & 19th, 2012. HCISD would like to give a big congrats to all these students that came out and participated.

    The students of Odillia Armenta's fifth grade class participated in a fun project to learn about the different genres of fiction. The students each read stories and researched the different types of literature and presented stories to their class either in the form of a poster, skit or puppet show.

    The Ben Milam Elementary School chess team won first place in the state competition last weekend in Houston.Both of the school's teams took first place in their divisions. Omar Arizpe took first place in the individual competition.

  • Ben Milam hosts reading events

    Nancy Rayer smiled at the group of pre-K students walking out the door of the Ben Milam Elementary library Thursday morning. Rayer, the campus librarian, just hosted the group for a puppet show and a book give-away. "At Ben Milam, we know that reading is the foundation of education," Rayer said.

  • UTPA Recognizes HCISD's Teachers of the Year

    UTPA's College of Education hosted their 6th Annual Teacher of the Year awards banquet, recognizing two of Harlingen CISD's teachers of the year Wednesday night. Jesse Saldivar from Ben Milam Elementary and Thomas Bald from Harlingen High School South received an award for their outstanding practice in the classroom. Teacher honorees and administrators from 25 districts were present at the event. Keynote speaker Dr. Miguel Nevarez, professor from the Department of Educational Leadership, spoke about the impact the teachers had on students'.
