Creating a habit of life-long reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our students. Establishing this habit early and nurturing it throughout their school years is critical to students' success in school and beyond. As students in Pre-AP and AP Courses, it is vital that students become well-read to prepare them for the increased demands of the Pre-AP and AP Course expectations.
Harlingen CISD requires all students enrolled in Pre-AP or AP English courses in grades 6-12 to participate in the Pre-AP/AP Summer Reading Program. Summer reading...
- allows teachers to begin literacy discussions as soon as the school year begins,
- maintains students' English/Language Arts skills over the summer,
- encourages students to be independent readers and life-long learners, and
- exposes students to literature they might not select on their own.
Completing the assigned Summer Reading Program novel for the students' grade level is a condition of enrollment in a Pre-AP/AP English class. The student is responsible for securing a copy of the novel either by purchase or checking it out from a library, online lending source, or from the school or district (based on availability). When students begin the course in the Fall semester, they will be required to take a test over the novel - which will include multiple choice questions, open-ended response questions, and/or a short essay - during the first few weeks of the new school year.Link to the Student/Parent Contract
