The University Interscholastic League Academic Program is an excellent opportunity for students to spread their wings and stretch their minds. Students attend and compete in invitational meets in preparation for the UIL District Meet.

Students may choose as many testing events as they have time in their schedule to practice and compete. Speaking events are limited to two per participant.  Practices begin the week of September 17, 2012.

Nov 17 - Rio Grande City Invitational Meet
Dec 8 - Mission Invitational Meet
January 18-19 - District Meet @ Memorial MS in Harlingen

 Practice Information

  • Practice Makes Winners!
  • Students may choose as many testing events as they can fit into their practice schedule but are limited to two speaking events.
  • Transportation is provided through A.C.E., but the student must enroll in and attend A.C.E. after practice to ride the bus. Busses leave campus by 6:00 p.m.

Calculator Applications Testing Event. Designed to stimulate the development of mathematical and calculator skills, the contest's goals are intellectual and practical, developing reasoning and the application of problem-solving skills toward realistic problems.

Dictionary Skills Testing Event. Thorough knowledge of the dictionary is a way to increase a student's ability to find the information needed for classwork and everyday living.

Duet Acting Speaking Event. Student(s) choose and memorize a scene and add movenents and gestures to help tell the story. Chair(s) may be used as props.

Impromptu Speaking Speaking Event. Provide opportunities for students to organize ideas; to prepare and deliver speeches; to evaluate speeches given by others; and to develop self-confidence.

Listening Skills Testing Event. Helps students recognize the importance of effective listening skills and to identify problems they may have in listening effectively.

Maps, Graphs & Charts Testing Event. Designed to help students learn to get information from world maps, pie charts, bar charts, and local area maps.

Mathematics Testing Event. Learning to quickly complete math problems is a valuable skill in all facets of life.

One Act Play Consists of a 45-minute play with various actors and props. Please see Miss Hinojosa for play information and possible tryouts. There are no meets. Only a one-time performance in February.

Prose/Poetry Speaking Event. Students prepare a piece of prose or poetry to read out loud, learning to analyze the text as a literary critic, growing and developing as a performer.

Ready Writing Given 2 hours to write an essay on one of two topics, Ready Writing helps students refine their writing abilities, writing an interesting, origical paper clearly and correctly.

Science Testing Event. Emphasis is on knowledge of scientific fact, understanding of scientific principles, and the ability to think through scientific problems.

Social Studies Discovery, exploration, adventure, and battle are just some of the topics covered. Students pit their knowledge of historical events in this testing event.
