    All Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District teachers and staff will receive a pay increase after the Board of Trustees approved the item for the 2012-2013 school year budget during a special meeting Tuesday night.

  • Board approves Romero as new executive director for school leadership

    After 23 years working at J.W. Long Elementary, Lori Romero was named as the executive director for school leadership for the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District during the July school board meeting Tuesday night. Romero, who has served as the Long Elementary principal since 2005, also served at the school as a teacher and an assistant principal. The executive director for school leadership will assist the Deputy Superintendent for Transformation and School Support Dr. Arturo Cavazos. In the new role, Romero will provide support for principals at the district’s 27 campuses.

  • Board forms special committee for innovation and technology

    School board members and administrators met on Tuesday June 26 as part of a Special Committee for Innovation and Technology, a new venture that aims to strategically review the district’s current technology programs and to develop new initiatives. The committee, which includes board members Dr. Nolan Perez, George McShan and Javier DeLeon as well as Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores and Deputy Superintendent for Transformational Leadership Dr. Arturo Cavazos, will meet regularly to discuss the district’s technology plan, areas for expansion of technology utilization and advise the district on funding and implementation strategies.

  • Board approves new HR director, assistant principal at HHS

    Tuesday night the Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Loretta Lynn Sanchez as a Director of Human Resources and Doyle Jackson Todd, Jr. as an Assistant Principal at Harlingen High School. Mrs. Sanchez received her Masters in Educational Leadership and Counseling and Guidance from the University of Texas-Pan America and is currently an Assistant Principal for Bowie Elementary. Mr. Todd has a Masters in Education from the University of Texas-Brownsville and comes to us from Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen ISD.

  • Board restructures, appoints Dr. Maldonado as president

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees restructured its board during Monday night’s special meeting. The board appointed Dr. Cesar Maldonado to serve as board president for the 2012-2013 school year, replacing Gerry Fleuriet. The board also named George McShan as the new vice president and Javier De Leon as the new secretary.

  • Board hears presentations on KHAN, and Dual Language academies

    As part of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District’s transformation, the Board of Trustees heard presentations Tuesday night on the district’s plan for opening a Two-Way Dual Language Academy and how classrooms can incorporate KHAN Academy. Teach for America Fellow and Donna Independent School District teacher Michael Besser presented on KHAN Academy, an online program that offers over 3,000 free instructional videos covering curriculum ranging from history to finance.

  • Trustees excited to serve new term on school board

    The three members of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees scheduled for reelection this spring have all retained their places on the board. During Tuesday night’s regular meeting, trustees approved a certification of unopposed candidates for places four, five and six, certifying members Dr. Cesar Maldonado, Dr. Nolan Perez and George McShan. HCISD board member serve three year terms.

    Board hires new Stuart Place principal, adopts 2012-2013 calendar

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Michele Todd as the new principal of Stuart Place Elementary, and adopted the calendar for the 2012-2013 school year during a special meeting Wednesday night. Todd, who currently serves as assistant principal at Wilson Elementary, will take over for Vivian Bauer, the first principal for the Ninth Grade Academy. Todd comes to Stuart with 22 years of experience in HCISD, serving as a third grade teacher at Ben Milam Elementary, a sixth grade teacher at Treasure Hills Elementary and in her current role at Wilson for the past 15 years.

  • District recognizes board, hears presentation on Ninth Grade Academy

    Outstanding student creativity was on display during Tuesday night's regular meeting of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees. As part of Texas School Board Recognition Month, student artists presented original artworks to board members during the meeting. The board also heard a presentation from new Ninth Grade Academy Principal Vivian Bauer on the transformational change occurring with the campus.

  • Scholars stand out during regular board meeting

    The Department for Advanced Academic Services presented the 2011 high school scholars from Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Board of Trustees. Students earned academic awards based on grade point average, advanced placement test and/or standardized testing results.

    Musicians take center stage

    The regular meeting of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees was filled with awards and recognitions across the campuses. The Music Department took center stage with recognitions of two former Gutierrez Middle School choir students, who were recognized for their involvement in the Texas Middle School Honor Choir this past summer.

    Board approves balanced budget for 2011-2012 school year

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a balanced budget of $168.15 million for the 2011-2012 school year during a special meeting Thursday night.The approved budget is $5.28 million less than the previous year for HCISD, a decrease of about 3.04 percent, as a result of a cut in state revenue. The district lost money from the state in four separate funds, equaling about $6.8 million.

  • Board approves vision, mission and goals; adopts new interdistrict transfer policy

    The Harlingen ConsolidatedIndependent School District Board of Trustees made two significant decisions that will shape the district for years to come. First, the board approveda new vision, mission and goals for the entire district, setting the bar for HCISD performance and stating a series of standards that effect students, staff, administration, the board and the community, Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores said. The board also approved a new local policy for enrollment that will allow parents who are employed by businesses and organizations within HCISD’s boundaries the opportunity to send their children to HCISD schools.

  • Munivez to head HHS, Board approves three assistant principals

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Imelda Munivez to be the next principal at Harlingen High School during a special meeting Monday night.The board also approved the hiring of three new assistant principals -- Michelle Gonzalez at Treasure Hills Elementary, Melissa Almaraz at Lee Means Elementary and Jacinto Sauceda at Coakley Middle School.Munivez comes into her new position at HHS after serving the campus as an assistant principal since 2008. She also served the campus as an interim principal during the end of 2011. She brings 15 years of experience in education, including stops at the university of Texas at Brownsville, Los Fresnos Independent School District, KEYS Academy and two years at HHS as a counselor. Munivez is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin. She received her masters degree from the UTB.

  • Board approves new principal at Wilson, three new assistant principals

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Kristi David for the principal opening at Wilson Elementary, as well as the hiring of three assistant principals at Crockett, Lamar and Zavala elementary schools during Tuesday night’s regular meeting.The Board also approved the hires of Mindy Sanchez at Crockett, Tracy Hitchcock at Lamar and Tanya Garza at Zavala for the assistant principal vacancies.David comes to Wilson after five years at Dr. Rodriguez Elementary, where she served as the school’s assistant principal. She has been with HCISD since 1994, working at Memorial, Vernon and Vela middle schools as a GT facilitator and a science teacher. David is a graduate of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. She received her masters degree from the University of Texas at Brownsville.

  • TSTC names Maldonado Vice Chancellor of Research and Commercialization

    Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Chancellor Mike Resser announced that effective immediately Dr. Cesar Maldonado, President of TSTC Harlingen and Vice President of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees, is assuming the additional duties of Vice Chancellor of Research and Commercialization for the TSTC System. The Office of Institutional Research and Commercialization (OIRC) has been created to enhance the operational performance of the TSTC System and to form strategic alliances for the development of innovative instructional models and delivery packages.

  • Board discusses savings, revenue sources during budget workshop

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees met in special session Wednesday afternoon to host its second budget workshop for the 2011-2012 school year.Budget workshops are public meetings where the board discusses possibilities concerning the budget for the forthcoming year. Items discussed during the meeting are potential district initiatives. The board has until August 31to adopt a final budget.Trustees and superintendent’s staff discussed several potential cost saving and revenue generating initiatives for the budget, including a one year freeze of employee salaries; cuts to operating costs; restructuring of the district’s health care premium and/or bidding the district’s health care out to other providers; implementation of an open enrollment program; and the sale of advertising at athletic facilities.

    The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District board of trustees approved the hiring of principals at Bonham, Dishman, Treasure Hills and Secondary Alternative Center during a special meeting Wednesday afternoon.The board approved the hiring Herminia Ramirez at Bonham Elementary, Irma Davis at Dishman, Virginia Armstrong at Treasure Hills and Daniel Araiza at the Secondary Alternative Center.

  • District receives risk management grant, recognizes South graduate

    The Texas Association for School Boards presented Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District a $3,000 grant for its risk management program during Tuesday evening's regular meeting of the Board.The district will use those funds to purchase safety equipment across the district, allowing the district to uphold its reputation for safety.One month after realigning postions on the Board, President Gerry Fleuriet appointed trustees to their respective committee and campus assignments, and the Board recognized Harlingen High School South graduate, Monica Peña, who received the Air Force JROTC gold medal for valor in April.

    One week before its first graduating class will walk down the stage, Early College High School found out who will replace its first director. The Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Lamar Elementary Assistant Principal Angel Sanchez to the position of Director at ECHS during a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.

  • Board recognizes Verna Young for service, names Gerry Fleuriet Board President

    Three members of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees were sworn into office to serve another term Tuesday afternoon during a special meeting.Dr. Nolan Perez, Javier De Leon and Gerry Fleuriet all retained their positions as trustees for the 2011-2012 school year. De Leon and Fleuriet will serve three-year terms, while Dr. Perez will serve a one-year term to fill out the seat vacated by Omar Cano in the fall of 2010.

    The Board of Trustees recognized the 11 campuses named "Distinguished Schools" by Texas Education Agency and met with Team One members during Tuesday night's regular meeting of the Board of Trustees.Trustees also recognized the 2010-2011 Teachers of the Year, Dr. Lisa Irby and Sonya Brandenburg, during the meeting.
