Gerry MacPherson Fleuriet
Gerry Fleuriet has been an HCISD board member since 1996, and is a Leadership TASB graduate. A Harlingen native and HHS graduate, she is also a graduate of Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, which awarded her membership in honorary education associations Kappa Delta Epsilon and Kappa Pi. Long a volunteer in Harlingen schools, she helped create the Harlingen Area Education Foundation and the original HHS Graduation Celebration, as well as the College and Career Resource Rooms, all award-winning programs for students. Mrs. Fleuriet served on the TASB Risk Management Board for 15 years and was a member of the TASB Board of Directors. Texas PTA twice awarded her Honorary Lifetime Membership for her service to schools, including PTA presidencies on each elementary and secondary campus attended by her children.
A former elementary teacher, Mrs. Fleuriet also served as a Community Relations Banking Officer.
She is a founder and continuing vice president of the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation, Inc. As the first RioFest Honorary Lifetime Director, she received the Texas Festivals’ Association Founders Award. She helped form Harlingen Main Street and Leadership Harlingen and served on a number of community boards and committees, including Harlingen’s Capital Improvement Advisory Board. Mrs. Fleuriet served as the University of Texas Brownsville Development Board Chair and as an Elder of First Presbyterian Church. A graduate of Leadership America and Leadership Texas, she has been recognized by the Zonta Club as the Woman of the Year and by the Zonta 2 Club as the Woman of Excellence for Community Service. She received the North Harlingen Rotary Club’s Service Above Self award and was an original brick honoree for the Harlingen Walk of Fame. She is the 2002 recipient of the Heritage Award from the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce for her leadership and service to the community. In 2016, Mrs. Fleuriet was honored to receive the Girl Scouts’ Award of Distinction for dedication to service through education and healthcare, and in 2019, was the recipient of the TSTA/NEA Friend of Education Award for her commitment to teachers and students. In the summer of 2020, Delta Kappa Gamma selected Gerry to receive its ASTEF Advocate for Education Award for her support and commitment to improve education in Texas.
Mrs. Fleuriet and her husband, retired attorney E.R. Fleuriet, are the proud parents of son, international attorney Ken Fleuriet, and daughter, Professor & Associate Dean at UTSA Dr. Jill Fleuriet, and their spouses Kari Fleuriet and Bill Spedding, and equally proud grandparents of Kellie Nicole Fleuriet, Matthew David Randolph Fleuriet, and Hazel Marie Spedding. Four generations of Mr. and Mrs. Fleuriet’s family have attended HCISD schools.
In 2019, Mrs. Fleuriet was part of the team recognized as Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators.
