A Vision for Innovating and Optimizing Learning Spaces

  • Message From the Superintendent:

    Dear HCISD Families and Team,

Our mission calls us to create meaningful choices for students and families, and our community has made it clear that they want more opportunities in STEM and in the fine arts. That is why we are proposing two new specialty elementary schools for 2026–2027: Zavala STEM Academy and Lamar Fine Arts Academy.

These specialty schools are designed to open doors for students through hands-on STEM learning and enriched fine arts experiences, supported by training, resources, and programming aligned to each campus designation. We already offer specialty options in these areas, and this proposal expands access to what families have asked us to provide.

To make these opportunities a reality, we must combine enrollment in a way that supports strong programming and long-term sustainability. If approved, students from Crockett Elementary will report to Zavala STEM Academy in 2026–2027, and students from Jefferson Elementary will report to Lamar Fine Arts Academy in 2026–2027.

We recognize that Crockett and Jefferson have deep roots and meaningful connections in our community. As part of this transition, both campuses will begin a new chapter with a renewed focus and purpose. While students will transition to their respective new campuses, the buildings themselves will be thoughtfully reimagined to continue serving our families in meaningful ways.

Jefferson will be reimagined through an expanded partnership with Head Start, allowing us to better serve our youngest learners and strengthen early childhood education opportunities across HCISD. Crockett will be reimagined as a place of HOPE, which stands for Helping Others Prosper and Excel, for HCISD families, including the expansion of Keys Academy+ to provide enhanced support and expanded pathways for students.

We honor the history and lasting impact of these schools and remain committed to supporting every student, every family, and every staff member through a thoughtful and respectful transition process. Clear timelines will be shared, opportunities for questions will be provided, and we will continue communicating openly as we move forward together.

To ensure this transition is smooth and supportive, campus transition teams will be formed. These transition teams will work together to plan logistics, address concerns, and help guide students and families every step of the way.

We have published this webpage that includes key information, answers to common questions, and a place to submit questions. We will also host public hearings to listen, share details, and provide support.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for believing in the potential of our students. Together, we will keep building a district where opportunities expand and every child has access to experiences that inspire their future.

    With gratitude,
    Dr. Veronica Kortan
    Superintendent of Schools, Harlingen CISD

  • New Boundaries
  • Provides students the opportunity to explore the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. The school features a small learning environment that incorporates 1:1 technology. In class, students are challenged to tackle complex, global issues, all while cultivating the 4C’s — Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and, Critical Thinking.

  • Students explore and develop their creative talents through a unique, vertically aligned curriculum that integrates dance, music, visual arts, and theater. In addition to daily learning experiences, students can participate in free after-school enrichment opportunities that help them grow as artists and performers.
