It was a championship day for Harlingen CISD at the 2026 UIL Middle School Academic and Speech Meet, where our students proudly swept the top three spots in an incredible district showing.

Taking place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Riverside Middle School in San Benito, the competition brought together top middle school scholars from across the region. After months of preparation and determination, HCISD students rose to the top, led by Gutierrez Middle School of Arts & Sciences, who earned an outstanding 643 total points. Vernon Middle School World Languages Academy followed with 364 points, and Memorial Middle School secured third with 359 points.

The point totals reflected a combination of academic and speech events—two areas where our students continue to shine. From impromptu speaking to mathematics, science, and literary criticism, our middle schoolers demonstrated the power of preparation and perseverance.

“These students have worked tirelessly for months to prepare for this moment, and their hard work and dedication have truly paid off,” said Dr. Veronica Kortan, Superintendent of Schools. “This kind of performance reflects not only academic excellence but also the spirit and tenacity that define HCISD.”

We are incredibly proud of all the students and coaches who contributed to this tremendous achievement. Their success is a testament to the strong culture of excellence across our district and the belief that every student has the potential to lead and succeed.

Congratulations again to Gutierrez, Vernon, and Memorial—and to every student who stepped up to compete. You’ve made HCISD proud!
