Rising Stars: Four HCISD First-Year Teachers Earn Scholarships

Harlingen CISD is proud to announce that, for the third consecutive year, our first-year educators have been recognized by the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF). Out of only 45 teachers selected statewide for the 2026-2027 First-Year Teacher Scholarship program, HCISD is home to four of the winners.
Our HCISD 2026-2027 TRTF Scholarship Recipients are:
- Cynthia Irwin – Chemistry Teacher, Harlingen School of Health Professions
- Alexandria Sikes – Social Studies Teacher, Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy
- Mario Villarreal – Science Teacher, Travis STEM² Academy K-8 School of Innovation
- Beaudri Gonzalez – Pre-K Teacher, Austin Elementary IB World School
This prestigious scholarship provides $1,000 to each recipient to support the initial costs of creating a high-quality learning environment. Winners have demonstrated exceptional vision, planning to use awarded funds to move beyond traditional teaching and create immersive, high-tech, and hands-on experiences for their students.
“Ms. Irwin, Ms. Sikes, Mr. Villarreal, and Ms. Gonzalez represent the bright future of our district," says Ana Rodriguez-Cintron, Teacher Pipeline Facilitator. "To see our first-year teachers consistently competing and winning at the state level for three years running proves that we are attracting the best and brightest to HCISD. Taking the time to apply for a competitive scholarship during their very first year of teaching says so much about their heart and dedication."
By securing these scholarship funds, these educators are establishing a high standard for student engagement and academic success that will benefit our students for years to come.
HCISD congratulates these four outstanding individuals as they begin their journey in education, proving once again that our district is a leader in cultivating teaching excellence.
How the Funds Will Be Used
Cynthia Irwin (Harlingen School of Health Professions) will enhance chemistry instruction by purchasing essential laboratory tools, such as graphing calculators and pH meters, to provide students with the real-time data analysis skills needed for AP coursework and future healthcare careers.
Alexandria Sikes (Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy) plans to foster historical thinking by creating a collaborative, yearlong classroom timeline alongside an interactive data growth tracker that allows students to visualize their progress as they explore cultural developments and trade routes.
Mario Villarreal (Travis STEM2 Academy K-8 School of Innovation) will transform his classroom into a dynamic discovery hub by investing in durable lab equipment, including microscopes and circuit kits, paired with interactive models and display boards to showcase student-led scientific inquiries.
Beaudri Gonzalez (Austin Elementary IB World School) aims to build a joyful foundation for her students by providing a diverse collection of early literacy books, math manipulatives, and outdoor nature exploration kits that support various learning styles through play and teamwork.
